MARY BREMER BEER TO DIRECT WCT'S HAIRSPRAY!

Warren Civic Theatre is holding open auditions for adults and children August 23rd through 29th for the Tony Award winning Best Musical Hairspray, at the Warren Community Center, 5460 Arden in Warren. Rehearsals will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Hairspraydelights audiences by sweeping them away to 1960's Baltimore, where the 50's are out -- and change is in the air. Loveable, plus-size, heroine Tracy Turnblad has a passion for dancin’, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show. ’Over-night she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program's reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair?

“The moment we received notification that the rights to this show were available, we jumped at the chance to be the first theatre company to produce this in the Metro Detroit area,” says Greg Trzaskoma, Artistic Director and founder of the Warren Civic Theatre.

“I am delighted to be working with the Warren Civic Theatre,” says Mary Bremer Beer, Warren resident, and director of the show. Bremer Beer has directed plays for many professional theatres as well as being the longtime artistic director of the Dearborn Youth Theatre. She is an award-winning director for The Theatre Company, University of Detroit Mercy. For the past 20 years she was Associate Director of the UDM Classic Theatre Study Abroad program in Greece. She is a member of Actors’ Equity Association and a winner of the National Irene Ryan award. Additionally, she has won Best Director and Best Actress awards from the Detroit News, Detroit Monthly Magazine, and the Detroit Free Press, which also awarded her their Lee Hills Distinguished Career Service Award. Megan Gilbert is slated to choreograph and Matt Fillion returns to WCT as music director.

So Run and Tell That to your friends that are, and want to be, actors, singers, dancers, musicians, stage hands and theatre artists. It Takes Two is not the motto at Warren Civic Theatre, where they have been known to stage hundreds of actors in their musicals.

You Can’t Stop the Beat at the Warren Civic Theatre. This season they have five full length shows scheduled. WOW! Internet Cable Telephone and The City of Warren Department of Parks and Recreation are helping WCT celebrate its 20th season of community and educational theatre by sponsoring this event. WCT also has ongoing acting classes for adults and children scheduled this fall and winter.
